Data Scientist / Software Developer

We are scientists and engineers who enjoy solving the real-world technical challenges faced by industry-leading companies at the forefront of science and technology. Using a combination of deep domain knowledge and technical expertise, including data science, analytics and software engineering, we work with our clients to find new ways to unlock the value held within their data, enabling better-informed business decisions.

We are looking for talented science, mathematics and engineering graduates and postgraduates to join us. You will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge you have gained during your studies and use a range of skills to create, develop and deliver solutions that truly make a difference in the world.

The Role
You will help our clients solve a variety of science and engineering problems. Projects can span a range of activities and your responsibilities will include:
• Combining domain knowledge and technical skills to understand and solve the complex challenges facing our clients.
• Using data science, analytics and a variety of analytical, statistical or machine learning techniques to interpret client data, helping them to make better-informed business decisions.
• Designing and developing custom software solutions or tools (e.g. visualisation).
• Building strong relationships, communicating and collaborating with clients and colleagues.
Our projects are exciting and rewarding and provide plenty of opportunities to learn and develop. They can be based either on client sites or in Tessella offices, so you will be expected to undertake regular travel, usually no more than one hour from your base office. You will be assigned to projects based on your existing skills and experience, but you will also learn new domains and technologies and apply innovative thinking and transferable skills to solve new challenges.

Requirements
We are looking for enthusiastic graduates and postgraduates, with a passion for problem solving, to join us. During your career at Tessella, you will learn and develop your skills, but before you join us you should have:
• MSc or PhD in science, mathematics or engineering. We recruit scientists, mathematicians and engineers because they have the domain knowledge required to understand our clients’ industry-related challenges.
• The ability to interpret complex data using a variety of analytical, statistical or machine learning techniques.
• Software underpins many of the solutions we provide, so you need to have some programming skills. We do not expect you to be an expert, but a good grounding in one of our core languages is required: Java, Python, C, C#, C++, R, Matlab.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to explain complex concepts to clients and colleagues from all backgrounds.
• The eagerness and capacity to quickly learn new domains and technologies.
• Fluent in the Dutch language (speaking and writing)

Career Development and Training
We offer excellent prospects for your future. While we do offer traditional career paths, most staff end up shaping their own based on their aspirations, the skills they have developed and the projects they have worked on. As your career progresses, you will be able to contribute to projects in a variety of roles, from Data Scientist and Software Developer to Business Analyst and Project Manager, or any combination of these. We take personal development seriously and all staff receive an annual training allowance of 150 hours, which can be used to learn new technical and soft skills, often leading to recognised professional qualifications.

Business Analyst

The Role
As a Business Analyst at Tessella you will enjoy a varied, challenging and rewarding role. You will be working with our customers and internal project teams to help solve complex problems, fulfil needs and exceed expectations.
Our projects range from complex computing and analytical challenges through to technical consultancy, modelling and simulation. Although most of your work is likely to be in life sciences, you will also be expected to work across a number of domains in different scientific and technical areas and be keen to expand your experience into new areas of expertise. You should be committed to delivering high quality solutions which will add real value to our clients’ businesses.
The role will involve a reasonable amount of travel to meet with customers. Ideally the position would be based out of our Stevenage office, but given that travel will be a necessary part of the role, we would also consider candidates who wish to be based from one of our other offices.

Responsibilities
• Apply your strong analytical skills to thoroughly understand our customers’ business and IT needs, translate and capture requirement specifications using common templates using natural language.
• Elicit technical, functional and non-functional requirements using document analysis, workflow analysis, business process descriptions, scenarios and use cases via interviews, customer site visits and requirement workshops.
• Analyse and evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, deconvolute and decompose higher level information into focused detail. Abstract lower level technical detail to enable a general understanding of the information and problem at hand.
• Drive and challenge our customers on their assumptions as to how they can successfully execute their plans and work with them to identify and differentiate true underlying business needs from user requests.
• Act as a conduit between business and customer representatives and the software development teams. Ensure that all requirements and needs are communicated accurately and effectively and are well understood.
• Represent the end users in ensuring solution compliance by helping draft test plans and scripts and carrying out high-level integration and acceptance testing.
• Support Tessella sales managers with generating proposals for tender and winning new business for the company.
• Line Management of technical staff (who are all first-class graduates and postgraduates), ensuring that we continue to provide the challenging and stimulating careers they enjoy at Tessella.

Requirements
• A Msc or a PhD.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to work and interact with diverse groups of people across varied problem domains.
• The ability to engage in and manage multiple activities simultaneously.
• A good understanding of current business analysis best practices and be able to leverage benefit from their application to new problems.
• Experience in a science or engineering domain, ideally life sciences.
• Experience in analytics, energy, public sector or consumer goods domains would be an advantage.

Scientific Project Manager – Software / Data Analytics

We are looking for Project Managers to join our successful and expanding consultancy. Tessella provides data science, analytics and scientific software services to solve complex R&D challenges for our clients. Applicants should have a background in science, engineering or technology and experience of managing and delivering software development projects.
Our work ranges from solving real-world, computational challenges through to modelling, simulation and consultancy. You will plan, control and execute projects through the full lifecycle, while managing stakeholders, timescales and budgets. Your activities will vary depending on the project and may include business analysis, requirements capture, technical guidance and more.

The Role
We are looking for a talented Project Manager with a background in science, technology or engineering and experience of successfully managing projects involving software development, ideally within an R&D environment. You should have a good technical awareness to be able to work within an R&D setting where deliverables may be unknown at the start of the engagement.
As a Project Manager in Tessella, you will have a varied, challenging and rewarding role. You will shape and drive projects through the full project lifecycle, often from the pre-sales stage, fulfilling our clients’ needs and exceeding their expectations. Depending on the project, your activities will include business analysis, requirements capture, technical guidance, etc.

Responsibilities:
• Plan, control and execute projects including risk management, change control processes and documentation.
• Successfully manage relevant stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure completion of project tasks within planned timescales and budgets to produce a solution that will delight our clients.
• Maintain and develop excellent professional relationships.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of complex technical systems and processes, with the ability to work with senior technical staff to help analyse and architect software and technical solutions.
• Undertake and/or support requirements analysis activities and feed back to the client in a way that moves their understanding forward.
• Provide effective leadership to the project team to ensure the development of high quality solutions.
• Provide active line management to staff (who are all first-class data scientists and consultants, many of whom have PhDs), ensuring that we continue to provide the challenging and stimulating careers they enjoy at Tessella.

Our Projects
Our projects range from complex computing and analytical challenges through to modelling, simulation and technical consultancy. Many of our projects involve big data and analytics, helping clients to better understand and make use of their data to improve their processes and enable better-informed business decisions. Other projects involve more traditional software development, creating bespoke applications to solve specific R&D challenges for our clients.

Requirements
To succeed in this role, you should have:
• MSc or PhD in science, mathematics or engineering.
• A proven track record of successful project management, ideally including the delivery of fixed price projects.
• An understanding of agile and V software development lifecycles and experience of managing software development projects.
• Ideally project management certification (e.g. PRINCE2, PMI or APM).
• Line management experience.
• Experience of hands-on software development, analytics or data science would be an advantage.

Senior Data Scientist

• Apply a broad array of capabilities spanning machine learning, statistics, mathematics, modelling, simulation, text-mining, natural-language processing, data-mining, pathway/network analysis.

Requirements

Analytics Consultant

We are seeking a talented Analytics Consultant to join our consultancy practice and engage with our clients uncover, define and solve their complex data science and analytics challenges. The Role
Tessella provides data science, analytics and scientific software services to industry-leading companies. As part of our consultancy practice, your core function will be to work closely with our clients, helping to identify and understand their challenges and provide advice and guidance to help solve them. You will be expected to develop a detailed understanding of Tessella’s analytics propositions and how to articulate their value most effectively to our clients, with the aim of building long term engagements.
You will work across the full range of Tessella’s science and engineering sectors and you will have the opportunity to learn, develop and expand your expertise into new areas. The role will involve travel to clients in the UK and occasional trips to Europe and the US.

Responsibilities
• Start with often unclear or unfocused client requests and take the lead in exploring possible solutions to ensure real business benefits.
• Drive and challenge clients on their assumptions and constraints to identify the true underlying business need from their requests.
• Clarify, qualify and shape analytics opportunities with clients.
• Assist Tessella’s analytics delivery teams in defining the scope and direction of potential solutions.
• Support the on-boarding of the project delivery team and provide ongoing guidance and advice.
• Provide analytics and consultancy capabilities as part of an analytics solution delivery team as required.
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you should have:
• Background in science, mathematics or engineering (including a good academic record; 50% of our staff have PhDs).
• Proven technical track record in the data science and analytics domain (in consultancy and/or technical delivery).
• Good consultancy skills (e.g. stakeholder engagement and management, workshop facilitation, process and information modelling).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts in simple terms.
• Good interpersonal skills with the confidence to network and present to clients at all levels.
• The ability to manage and engage in multiple activities simultaneously.
