Workshop

Title: An introduction to real-time event processing in sports and beyond

Speaker: Jonathan Robijn

Summary:
In this era of sensors, clicks and transactions, data has become increasingly available in real-time leading to a growing interest in producing instantaneous insights as soon as data is collected.
In this session I will illustrate the value of ‘going real-time’ by highlighting several use cases and example projects that Qualogy has been involved with in the domain of sports. We will discuss the challenges to be overcome with real-time data processing. Topics to be reviewed include data fault-tolerance, handling imperfect or delayed data, minimal processing times, data volume, data velocity, windowing and stateful calculations. Additionally, I will talk about frameworks available for handling these challenges, such as Apache Spark.
In the second part of the session we will play with an example data stream in a hands-on workshop in which we will process football position data in real-time using Python. Be sure to bring your laptop!
