About Us
Over 40 boards of volunteers managed the Stichting Bètabanenmarkt. Our mission is to close the gap between the students of Leiden University and Leiden University of Applied Sciences and companies. We achieve this by organizing the Bètabanenmarkt and Bio Science Park Excursion.
How it all started
Over 40 years ago, the study associations of the science faculty of Leiden University saw the value of creating a shared career event for all science students. Although it started small, the event has grown ever since. Many companies were enthusiastic about this concept, and an annual Bètabanenmarkt has been organized since then.
The event kept growing, and it became clear that the Bètabanenmarkt was an established career event. In 1991 the Stichting Bètabanenmarkt was founded to organize the event from an independent entity.
Over the following years, the Faculty of Science grew in number of students, and new studies arose. The Bètabanenmarkt was keen to accommodate all those new science students and keep improving the event. Meanwhile, many students with a science background were studying at the LUMC (Leiden University Medical Center). These students are nowadays an audience of the Bètabanenmarkt since they are a great match with students and companies already visiting the Bètabanenmarkt.
For the last ten years, we have focused on making the career event even more relevant to students and companies. We achieved this by inviting PhD candidates, international students and alumni. Also, the career event has proven to be of value to science students of the Hogeschool Leiden and the mboRijnland. They are also visiting the event. We moved the event to a new location at Leiden University to accommodate the growth, providing more space to invite even more students and companies. Both companies and students are very enthusiastic about this growth, and there are many happy returning visitors.
As a result, the Bètabanenmarkt exceeded all expectations, growing from just under 300 visiting students to over 1,400 students in just a few years.

The Supervisory Board, who are they?
The board of the Bètabanenmarkt allows students to develop (soft) skills during their studies. Every year a new board takes place and manages the organization. To coach the board and assert the organization’s continuity, the Bètabanenmarkt has the Supervisory Board. The Supervisory Board comprises former board members with over 40 years of experience.
